Scheduled Travel Plan

Land at Leh airport and let the altitude introduce itself slowly. Leh sits at 3,524 metres, which is already high enough that your body needs time before you push further. This entire day is built around acclimatization. No sightseeing, no long drives, just rest, hydration, and an early dinner. Skip alcohol tonight. Overnight in Leh.

Today covers the sights closest to Leh. The Sangam, where the Indus and Zanskar rivers meet and visibly change colour where they join. Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, a Sikh shrine with a genuinely moving story behind it. Magnetic Hill, where your vehicle appears to roll uphill on its own, an optical illusion caused by the surrounding slope rather than anything magnetic. Leh Palace, a nine storey structure built in the 1600s that once rivalled Lhasa's Potala Palace in design. Hall of Fame, a museum run by the Indian Army covering the region's military history. And Shanti Stupa, best visited at sunset for the view across the Leh valley. Evening free for the Leh market. Overnight in Leh.

After breakfast, drive out of Leh climbs steadily toward Khardung La, about 40 kilometres away and roughly two hours up. At 5,359 metres, it is one of the highest points a vehicle can actually drive to anywhere on the planet. Stop at the top, take the obvious photo by the sign. Later, visit Nubra Valley, a landscape that looks nothing like the rest of Ladakh. Visit Diskit Monastery, home to a 32 metre statue of Maitreya Buddha and by evening you reach the sand dunes at Hunder. Overnigt in Hunder

Breakfast, then a long but scenic drive along the Shyok river route toward Pangong Tso. You arrive in the late afternoon, and the timing matters, this is when the lake tends to be at its most striking. Pangong stretches 134 kilometres, with about a third of it in India and the rest across the border in Tibet, sitting at approximately 4,350 metres. The water genuinely shifts colour through the day, turquoise, deep blue, almost grey depending on the light and clouds. Spend the evening by the water. Overnight in camps at Pangong, roughly 160 kilometres of driving for the day.

The return route goes over Chang La, sitting at roughly 5,360 metres and counted among the highest motorable passes in the world alongside Khardung La. En route, stop at the school featured in the film 3 Idiots, now a small but popular tourist stop in its own right. Evening free in Leh for last minute souvenir shopping. Overnight in Leh, about 160 kilometres and 6 to 7 hours of driving for the day.

Breakfast, then transfer to Leh airport. Flights should be booked after 12 noon to allow a comfortable checkout and transfer window. Trip ends here.
